Fiberglass Truck Bodies: Pros And Cons
Have you noticed that there are more and more fiberglass truck bodies around. The frequency of its use is gradually increasing, and at the same time, you are beginning to know and aspire for it. Being new to fiberglass trucks is a process of understanding.
Before, steel and aluminum trucks dominated the market. We need to have a whole new understanding of fiberglass truck body which is much more than a simple structure.
Why fiberglass is widely used worldwide. Well, it must have advantages that aluminum bodies cannot match. In summary, there are pros and cons to fiberglass. I’ll go over its advantages and disadvantages in my career as a truck engineer and materials engineer at Composite Box.
Advantages of Fiberglass Truck Bodies

Appearance:
Fiberglass looks better and is easy to install. We will mainly compare it to steel. This is because it will reflect the ability of fiberglass to perform in all aspects of performance.
Let’s first start our study from the outside. You will find that steel trucks have a lot of rivets and it is made by splicing. However, fiberglass trucks are molded in one piece. It saves a lot of labor and cost in assembly and is much more aesthetically pleasing.
Weight:
Fiberglass trucks are lighter in weight and it is manufactured with foam or with plywood into lightweight composites. Traditional aluminum and steel trucks are very heavy and affect driving efficiency.
Fiberglass improves driving efficiency and it is excellent lightweight material.
Durability:
Fiberglass trucks last up to 20 years. Steel trucks are prone to rust or corrosion, so fiberglass is the best option in bad weather. This is because fiberglass does not oxidize. Over time, steel trucks can develop rust, which affects the aesthetics, however, fiberglass trucks do not change in appearance and can withstand high impact without warping or bending easily. Steel trucks are stronger but are prone to deformation and other conditions.
Handling:
Fiberglass trucks handle better, and their light weight makes turning and accelerating faster and easier. It can improve the driver’s mood as well as reduce transportation time, saving time and fuel consumption. Steel trucks that add 50 kilograms add more fuel consumption. However, steel trucks are far inferior to fiberglass in terms of handling performance and are slow to start.
Hot Weather:
Fiberglass does not suffer on hot weather, steel trucks cause the temperature of the surface to rise dramatically and can burn the skin.
Installation Difficulty:
Fiberglass trucks body are commonly modular in design, the benefit is that they are easy to assemble and only take 2 people half a day to complete. Steel trucks are not as easy to install and require more labor.
Disadvantages of fiberglass trucks

Fiberglass body will cost a little more, which is expensive but can be a qualified investment.
It has a lifespan of over 20 years, which is very affordable when spread out over the annual cost. Choosing a fiberglass truck is a wise choice.
The main drawback of fiberglass trucks seems to be limited to price, and I can’t seem to think of any others.
